Child Headed Household
Today we visited a home of six that were orphaned when the oldest was 11 and the youngest was 2 - can you imagine? They have a grandmother on the other side of the valley that looks in on them but she is already caring for 10 orphans on her own. Welile is the oldest girl. She wakes up at 4AM each morning to cook porridge for the family. They leave for school at 6AM in order to walk an hour and half each way, rain or shine. Last year World Vision provided the materials for this home behind them and the entire community pitched in to building it. There is no electricity which makes the dark nights long and frightening for a family of children living alone. You can see the corn meal, flour, oil, beans, soap and brown sugar that World Vision provides for them to feed their family. They were so grateful for all they were given. We gave them a bag of American candy before we left pray for Mangaliso (age 17) and Welile (age 16) as they raise their young family.
