Signal Hill

On our final night in South Africa we took a small picnic to Signal Hill to watch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. I forgot my good camera at the hotel and took these with my Blackberry's camara.

Final Day

On the morning of our final day I made the journey to the top of Table Mountain one more time while Laura read by the pool.

Wine Country 2

This is one of my favorite photos. Wine country in South Africa has something that Napa does not - the mountains.

Wine Country

This is Boschendel Winery which was established in 1865.

Apartheid Reminder

This bench is marked for "non whites" and is a leftover reminder of Apartheid.

Bike Ride

We took a Cape Town bike tour one night that began at the Cape Grace Hotel on the Waterfront. The Cape Grace is the highest end hotel with presidents and royalty stay when they are in town. Here I am preparing for the trip.

Have You Ever Tasted Passion Fruit

We discovered passion fruit for the first time. This hard shell contains soft gooey seeds that have a sweet/tart flavor similar to grapefruit. We had it every morning.

Wonderful Assortment of Meat and Cheeses

We really enjoyed the cheese tray at breakfast. One of the things we grew to enjoy where the meats (which is an English/European tradition). They had pastrami and smoked chicken breast. We would make these open faced sandwiches with the hot and spicy mustard's and chutney they served - too good for words.

Breakfast at the Southern Sun

It would be impossible for me to describe the amazing breakfast that we were served each morning at our hotel and do it justice. There were fresh fruit of every variety, fresh juices, two types of bacon, omelet bar, pancakes, and a ton more.

On Our Way To Breakfast

I think Laura was annoyed with me taking this photo :)

Sunset

I chose this restaurant so we would be there around sunset - amazing.

More Kudu

You can see that I have fallen in love with kudu. They prepared it medium rare with a cranberry reduction over a cheesy risotto. I would travel back to South Africa just to get this dish.

Salad

Caprese Salad with a twist. They served with with warm mozzarella cheese.

Crab Cakes

These were made with crab and South African Salmon.

Blues

Possibly our favorite restaurant was in Camps Bay. It is called Blues and is on the second floor of this little mall overlooking the ocean. We ate there twice during our trip. There was an homemade ice cream store in the mall behind the restaurant as well that had the creamiest ice cream I've had anywhere with unique and exotic flavors.

View of Cape Town from the Island

Quarry

The quarry where the prisoners were made to work. The bright limestone was often blinding in the bright South African sun. Many of the prisoners were blinded by working here everyday.

Guides

The guides for Robben Island are former prisoners. It is very fascinating to hear their stories and firsthand accounts. Our guide has served as a tour host for Nelson Mandela, the Clintons, the Obamas and many world leaders.

Inside Nelson Mandela's Cell

Mandela's Cell

Nelson Mandela spent 18 years on Robben Island. His cell is the first one on the right.

Prison

In the early 1900's it was turned into a prison for criminals and later political prisoners were added to the island. The tour was conducted in buses with a live narrator.

Leper Colony

Robben Island began as a leper colony where they would quarantine folks with this highly contagious and deadly disease. Thousands are buried on the island.

View of Clock Tower From the Boat

Robben Island

We went to the "Alcatraz" of South Africa - Robben Island. This is where Nelson Mandela and many of the political prisoners were held during the time of Apartheid. This is the boat we took. We were on the second deck for the journey over which allowed for great views. Notice the perfect weather we were blessed with for our entire time in Cape Town.

Walk Around Town

I took a walk near our hotel and found this great view of Table Mountain.

Two Oceans Restaurant

There is a great restaurant called Two Oceans at the Cape Point. The Indian Ocean is to the left. The food was excellent and the prices reasonable. We ordered salads and appetizers to share.

Brave Little Guy

This furry little creature ran along side of us as we walked down from the lighthouse. They told us what it was called but I forget the name.

Close Up View of Lighthouse

View of the Cape

Notice the small little lighthouse on the very tip of the cliff. The Indian Ocean is to the left and the Atlantic is to the right.

Lighthouse

At the very tip of Africa is Cape Point. There is a cable car that you can ride to the top of this peak where the lighthouse is located. The cable car was under repair the day we were there so they had two vans that would drive you up to the peak.

Cape Point...at Last

This is the exact point where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet.

Penguins at Work

This little guy was busy carrying straw to build a nest.

Indian Ocean

We drove along the Indian Ocean on our way to the Cape. It was filled with little rocky beach areas like this. We stopped here to go in search of the warm water penguins that can found in this region.
